Amy Winehouse Avoids Jail During Court Appearance

Amy Winehouse avoided adding to her troubles today (Jan. 20) by narrowly escaping a jail sentence on an assault charge in England. The singer appeared in court in Milton Keynes, where she was accused of pulling the hair of theatre manager Richard Pound and calling him a “fucking cunt” after he refused her an alcoholic drink.

The singer appeared in court under her married name, Amy Civil, and her lawyer, Paul Morris, asked for leniency due to the “huge effect” the incident has apparently had on her drinking habits. Winehouse pleaded guilty to common assault and another of disorderly behavior.

She ultimately ended up with a £100 compensation charge to Pound, £85 in costs, and a two-year conditional discharge. Winehouse had allegedly had five vodka and Cokes before attending Pound’s theatre on Dec. 19, but his suggestion that she should choose water over a sixth alcoholic drink prompted the incident.
