American Idol secures rights to Beatles catalog

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has revealed on his radio show that the talent competition was able to secure the rights for a significant part of the Beatles’s catalog. The songs currently belong Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a company formed by the industry giant and Michael Jackson when the pop star burned all his “Say, Say, Say” good will and outbid Sir Paul for his own catalog. The Sony/ ATV website lists nearly two hundred songs on the website, credited to McCartney, McCartney/Lennon, McCartney/Lennon/Starkey, or the entire group. That means that while songs such as “Hard Day’s Night,” “Yesterday,” and “Let It Be” will be up for semi-professional pop interpretations, others penned solely by George Harrison like “Here Comes the Sun” are still not in the playbook. Though some Beatles fans will doubtless consider the prospect of this year’s Sanjaya massacring “A Day in the Life” as anathema, a couple of nights on television couldn’t hurt the Fab Four’s reputation nearly as much as a full decade of Wings.
