American Idol Contestants Cover Lykke Li for Ford Ad (Video)

Apparently, every week on American Idol, the remaining contestants cover a song for a glorified Ford commercial. This week the producers of the show threw a real curveball for the segment: they had the remaining seven contestants cover Lykke Li's "I'm Good, I'm Gone" in an incredibly hokey ad that finds them "working" as bakers and the like and failing, which I'm sure was the plot of an episode of Viva La Bam. The song choice was weird, but somehow fitting, and the performance was corny, as expected I suppose. I wonder if having to do crap like this is worth having the opportunity to be the new Ruben Studdard or Taylor Hicks. I'm betting no. [Stereogum]

A part of me was hurt that they covered this song. Usually, the choices are cheesy, sometimes they're solid, but you kind of see them coming. You'd think an artist as small as Lykke Li (small in the AI world sense) would not have received a second glance, but ugh, she did. The Ford videos have always had a kind of trainwreck appeal to them because you know the arrangement is going to suck, but they're badly entertaining in an "I can't believe what I'm seeing before my eyes" kind of way.
