A fellow student in one of my college classes used to only watch the first few episodes of American Idol because he and his friends had a drinking game set up for when someone would cry, tell Simon to go to hell, or say they were going to be “huge stars.” Me, I always felt like those people were set up to get crapped on: by the time they’re in front of Paula, Randy, and Simon, a lot of people know they’re awful, and want them to be humiliated.
I’m not going to say that the verbal thrashing Paula Goodspeed got at the hands of the American Idol judges (in the video above) directly led to her apparent suicide this week in front of Abdul's’s house, but it certainly didn’t make her feel any better about herself.
While on the show in 2005, Goodspeed was harangued by Simon for wearing braces, Ryan Seacrest patronizes her in a pre-interview, and she reveals that she has a Paula Abdul obsession.
Goodspeed’s body was found in her car close to Abdul’s house, and police found prescription drugs, and Paula Abdul pictures and CDs as well. Police are ruling the death as a probable suicide, but are awaiting autopsy reports. [Reuters]
