American Idol audience aging at an alarming rate
Simon Cowell, in all his waxy glory, is the only thing about American Idol not aging at an alarming rate. The lackluster debut of this year's edition compared to last year (which also set a new low) has some predicting the demise of the franchise, but even more alarming is the aging of the audience. In 2002, the median age of American Idol's audience was roughly thirty. The median age for this year was forty, which means that the show's audience is aging roughly four years faster than the show itself. Though producers might be trying to reinvigorate things by adding new judge Kara DioGuardi and focusing on younger, hotter contestants, the writing is most definitely on the wall: Listening to bad amateur versions of pop songs makes you old before your time.
