New York was always the proper place for punk music, but it seems unlikely that anyone who attended a show at CBGB's in the 70s thought that the genre would make it to Broadway. This weekend, however, a casting notice went out for a Broadway version of the Green Day-inspired musical American Idiot that was brought to life this year by the Berkeley Repertory Theatre Company in California.
Music from the show includes tracks from American Idiot (natch) and the latest Green Day album 21st Century Breakdown (doh) and the Michael Mayer-directed play apparently makes the discombobulating American Idiot story discernable. Mayer has also been confirmed as the man who will direct the Broadway shows.
No schedule or timeline has come out for this most recent sign of the coming apocalypse, but it's only a matter of time before the politically charged Green Day concept album will be viewed, presumably, by the same people who loved Wicked.
