Amazon launching DRM-free music service

via Hypebot
For all the hype the Zune garnered, this may be a real compelling new service for people. Rumors have abounded for some time about an Amazon music store - after all they sell everything from deodorant to flat screen televisions, so why not music? Selling music in MP3 format, without DRM restriction, will allow the tracks to be played on every device out there.
The other music service with a similar approach, EMusic, has done well with the format. The only knock on EMusic lies with the selection; labels aren't so forthcoming with their catalogue, so EMusic caters a little to the niche sections of the musical universe. If Amazon can leverage their clout to get a reasonable major label catalogue, it would definitely shake things up in the online music world.

A big company gets it. Excellent.

That's the only real knock on eMusic = catalog. The service, value and the freedom they give you is excellent. Is iTunes really benefitting sales-wise by restricting use of the files?

yeah, the catalog thing is an issue with emusic. i like because i tend to try out new bands or genres, but if you're looking for something in particular it's not that great. any chance amazon will overlook the super-small labels, though? i'd love for them to take in anyone who'll post their stuff.and i hope their downloads are at least 256k. 128 is ridiculous, itunes.
