List fight time! Amazon, that site where you buy Crocs, has compiled a list of the "100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time" that is as much a way for them to sell you indie rock albums (check the inclusion of "Deluxe Editions" of some of these albums) as way to inspire you to fight their inclusions. Here's how they prefaced the list:
The term "Indie Rock" is undeniably tricky. We challenge anyone to definitively define what is and what is not indie rock--you will fail. For the purposes of compiling this list we've decided to use a combination of hard and fast rules and gut instinct. Our hard and fast rules are listed below, but as for gut instinct--you just kind of have to know. For example: John Oates put out a rock record called Phunk Shui on an indie label, however, in no way should Phunk Shui be mistaken for indie rock. Likewise, Black Flag put out many seminal punk albums on SST, but we're not talking about punk or grunge or classic post-kraut-rock, we're talking about indie rock. Are Black Flag really indie rock? Not to our ears.
Amazon also adheres to the one album per artist rule. There are a handul of "whaaaaa?" moments here (Postal Service at 18? Whaaa? Unrest at 5? Whaaaa? Any album by Joan as Police Woman or The Promise Ring? Whaaaa?), but overall there are some inclusions that are often overlooked (like Deerhoof, Destroyer, Jawbreaker, Yo La Tengo, Superchunk) on lists like this. I don't really agree with their number one (Guided by Voices' Bee Thousand ), but I'm cool with it.

And yet again, the standards of indies are confused. The list seems to be focused on indie as it relates to 2009, even though it includes albums from the 80s and early 90s.
I would bitch incessantly about the omission of Double Nickels on the Dime and Zen Arcade if I thought it was anything but arbitrary.
Still, a clearly-defined time frame would be nice.
Zen Arcade is on there bro--#30.
Fine, I'll bitch about their weird exclusion of Black Flag then ;)
Actually, I'm glad to see Hüsker Dü above the Replacements—the Hüskers are perpetually underrated, while the Replacements are perpetually overrated, in my mind at least. Twin Cities Civil War!
That war is still waging today. I see dead soldiers every time I go downtown.
Indie rock is dead.
Yeah, purty much.
