It was recently announced that Marc Webb will direct The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Andrew Garfield will reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spidey. More news has broken today regarding a possible actress for Mary Jane Watson.
Indiewire reports that Shailene Woodley is in talks to play Mary Jane, who was played in the earlier Sam Raimi films by Kirsten Dunst. Where's Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in all this? Stone isn't officially attached to the sequel, but the actress has asserted that she would like Gwen's departure from the series to be faithful to the comics. Peter begins his relationship with Mary Jane in the comics after Gwen, so the casting of Woodley could put Stone's wishes in motion.
Woodley is probably best known among tweens for her role on the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which has been mocked on various occasions due to its wooden acting and cheesy storylines. However, film buffs known Woodley from her role as George Clooney's teenage daughter in last year's The Descendants. Woodley shined in that film, so there shouldn't be too much reason to worry about her acting chops.
Indiewire also points out that this summer's film set up Electro as the next villain, but it's not set in stone yet.
The new installment has a May 2, 2014 release date.
