Album of the Day: Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
This record was so big in the early 90s that there is a large portion of the population that believes it was released c.1991. Actually released in 1983, the record has developed quite the following, something the group's bizarre and occasionally excellent follow-ups never really could. Somewhere between folk rock and acoustic punk, the biggest songs, "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone" (recently covered by Gnarls Barkley, a single that is aging much more poorly than its original), are still great, but this is a solid record all the way through, one that doesn't deserve to be relegated to cult fans and (misplaced) 90s nostalgia.

Fantastic album. I also enjoy Calibretto 13, who were essentially a Violent Femmes tribute band without playing covers.
