Album of the Day: The Focus Group
Julian House, the man behind The Focus Group, has done packaging design for Stereolab and Broadcast, and he co-founded Ghost Box, the label releasing Sketches and Spells. I've just given you about eight adjectives to describe the sound of the music here, but there's room for a whole lot more. This is abstract and formless music that only occassionally comes together into a coherent arrangement, sample manipulation and looping without the beats nearly all artists in the genre rely on. For that reason, it's not for everyone, but for the Avalanches or Books fan that loves the thrill of the hunt and the world that sample-based music can throw you in to, rather than the rhythm-based constructions that those groups so artfully arrange, The Focus Group's debut is a perfect fit.
