Album of the Day: Secret Mommy

Secret Mommy - Very Rec (2005)

Though hardly conventional, Secret Mommy aka Andy Dixon is not making music that crosses boundaries or revolutionizes sound, he just happens to do what he does really really well. What that is is conceptually similar to Matmos or Herbert's more conceptual work (Plat Du Jour in particular), but his work is much less head and more heart, a pop version of those artists if there could be one. Using sounds recorded at gyms and public spaces where recreational activity was taking place, Dixon creates a cut and paste record that is at once jarring and blissful. The best part: it's only one record in a catalog that includes the tropical paradise of Hawaii 5.0 and will continue to impress with next year's Books-esque and brilliant Plays. Definitely an artist to watch in 2007, this one is called "Pool."
