Album of the Day: Matmos

Matmos - A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure
The big criticism against Matmos is that their work is too conceptual, and it sounds like a better idea than it actually plays out. Though Prefix didn't like the last Matmos record, it's much better than the review implies. Yet Matmos's real triumph in both concept and execution is here, on A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure. Using sounds from surgery, the duo constructed a surprisingly accessible record that is as playful as it is disconcerting. The clicks and cuts aesthetic obviously fits perfectly with the sounds of the OR, so their leap of logic doesn't seem too far. Good for all sorts of situations, moods, and recommendations to strong-stomached friends, this is one electronic record that will be remembered at the end of the decade when best-of lists come boiling up.
