Album of the Day: Killer Mike

Killer Mike: Monster (2003)
Though he's gotten even better in the ensuing years (and been thwarted at every attempt to put out a record), Killer Mike's debut was every bit as good as his show-stealing performance on Outkast's "The Whole World." Big Boi's guest appearance on "A.D.I.D.A.S." (and a great beat) made it the only song to make much of a splash nationally, but "Akshon (Yeah)" was one of the best songs of 2003, and it still sounds hard as hell today. Though the rap-rock combo usually falls flat, the guitar tracks here work well with Mike's powerful voice, and his skills are remarkable: Nearly every verse utilizes a different flow. Sometimes it's hard to believe it's still him rhyming. A real talent, that is hopefully only just beginning a major career.
