Grateful Dead - American Beauty I've said it before and I'll say it again: no band's musical legacy has been hurt more by its fans than the Grateful Dead. Though obviously a great deal of the blame must fall on the band itself, what with the relentless touring, escalating ticket prices, and six hours of dicking around on guitar. But we can forgive the "lifestyle" that grew up around the group, and its subsequent demise (which really was no different than the demise of other groups, and maybe better: would you rather see stereotypical hippies forever living out their youthful excursions or the Rolling Stones sponsored by an investment group? Wait, don't answer that.) After all, they made some truly great records, and when they are divorced from the stereotype that grew up around the Dead, this is some of the best country rock ever put to record. American Beauty is probably the strongest of them all, with excellent musicianship and strong songwriting that manages to sound both traditional and revolutionary. This is miles away from jamming, and it's all artfully and tightly crafted. Records like this can be difficult to see through the smoke and mirrors that social associations conjure up, but once you free your ears, your mind will follow. And stuff.
Awesome album...Box of Rain is juch a beautiful song. Good review, however I do like their "dicking around on guitar" more than a little bit :)

good call, great album. everytime i play this for people who question why anyone likes the dead, precisely because of their fanbase and tendency to "dick" around on guitar for hours, they always change their mind.
