Album of the Day: Dream Warriors

Dream Warriors - And Now, The Legacy Begins
Bright colors, wavy lines, dreams and legacies... it must be the early 90s. Early 90s conscious hip hop has the unique distinction within the broader genre of being liked by just about any demographic, be it underground heads, hip hop historians, indie rock kids, skaters, mainstream casual listeners, etc. Dream Warriors may not be the most famous record of the era (De La's 3 Feet High, Digable Planets' Reachin') or the best (same two) but it's got a loyal following, and rightfully so. THis is the classic style of the era, laid back, jazzy, lighthearted, and pretty decently forward looking and unique. The most famous song here is "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style," which used "Soul Bossa Nova" way before Austin Powers, but my favorite is the strange but extremely happy "Ludi," probably because no one could get away with it in today's hip hop climate.
