Dr. Dre - Dre 2001Here's my theory: for all the fame and crossover success that the Chronic enjoyed in the early 90s, 2001 was actually more influential. A guest appearance by Devin and ghostwriting from Em and Jay assured a quality record, but the importance of the record is all in its production. Space synths, blunted effects and tightly wound samples, the record is all misty and dark, the same style dre would bring to 50's Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Listen to "Xxplosive" and tell me Kanye wasn't taking notes. And after a quick run through of this record, you'll see exactly what Game was talking about when he called his record Doctor's Advocate: it sounds exactly like this. G-Funk may have been a quick trend in 92-94, but this stuff has spread over commercial hip hop country-wide for nearly a decade. Tell me I'm crazy.
