Album of the Day: Donna Summer

Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby (1975)
Back from vacation, and I just want to dance, dance, dance. Fortunately, I have Donna Summer's brilliant, essential, disco classic Love to Love You Baby. The title track is of course the most famous, nearly seventeen minutes of orgasmic, explosive space-funk courtesy of producer Giorgio Moroder, who, along with like-minded folks like Cerrone, created the eurodisco genre. But the second half of the record is equally redeeming, particularly the sexy groovy "Need a Man Blues." Summer's falsetto floats over and under the mix at Moroder's will, while sounds come out of nowhere, all for your listening and dancing pleasure. Though disco is a genre that is often disrespected, it appears set for a major comeback in 2007 (particularly Moroder's hyper-realized 2nd generation version). Let this record ride the waves into the new canon.
