Album of the Day: Buddy Miles

Buddy Miles - Expressway to Your Skull
Although Buddy Miles is probably most famous (along with collaborating with Jimi Hendrix in his Band of Gypsys) for his 1970 LP Them Changes, his debut a few years earlier, while a little less consistent, is the rawer of the two. The record successfully merges psychedelic rock with classic soul, and takes a whole lot of the funk in between to make it gel. It's a dirty record that often sounds like it was recorded in the same basement as Fun House, although Iggy Pop would never cover "Don't Mess With Cupid" this faithfully. The whole record comes over as some missing masterpiece that has languished in a vault for years, and really, this should be playing in underground clubs the world over, constantly following the darkness from continent to continent.
