Poets of Rhythm - Discern/Define
While I wouldn't exactly agree with RJD2 when he says that Deadringer is shit, I will agree with his assessment of the Poets of Rhythm's first Quannum record as essential, excellently recorded funk. Originally from Germany, the group first got noticed backing up Lyrics Born, whom they would later help out on his excellent solo debut and future album of the day, Later That Day... Here, the group displays their unbelievably tight playing style, effortlessly merging rare groove and hip hop, updating the former and giving the latter an organic, spacious sound that the genre rarely has. Also check out their debut, recently reissued on Daptone, and equally great.
