Original soul smoothie Al Green enlisted the aid of the Roots' ?uestlove to produce his forthcoming Blue Note release, Lay It Down, due out May 27. Early last year, in a Billboard interview, ?uestlove expressed his desire to keep it real, rather than take the young-guest-stars shortcut to recordmaking, saying "For veterans, their examples are the Santana of 1999 and the Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart of today. They're thinking, 'Okay, that is going to get me to the Grammy podium. Someone phone up John [Legend], Alicia [Keys] and Corinne [Bailey Rae] and let's get on Adult Contemporary radio.' I'm trying to get them out of that mode. It'll be a struggle but I think at the end of the day it will be a quality record."
Time has apparently decided the victor of that struggle, as the track that's just been made available on the web is in fact a duet between Green and the young Ms. Rae. While we can't speak for the rest of the album yet, ?uestlove can rest assured that at least some of his fears were unfounded; the tune they share, "Take Your Time," is a deliciously old-school slow jam that could have come straight off of I'm Still In Love With You, if not for the fact that Rae was not yet born when that classic album was released. Alicia Keys, come on down...
