Against Me!'s New Wave is the best punk album of the year...

Well, at least according to MTV. However, having your album praised as "best punk album of the year" by MTV is about as unpunk as it gets. Actually, getting labeled "best punk" anything is not very punk rock. With that said, I don't follow the genre as I once did but perhaps the loyal Prefix readers can let me know what good punk rock they've listened to this year. If forced to vote on something like this I'd place my ballot for No Age's Weirdo Rippers.
It's a blazing 33-odd minutes packed full of protest songs about music videos and file-sharing ("Up the Cuts,") and protest songs about the ineffectiveness of protest songs ("White People for Peace"); open-hearted duets with slightly embarrassing titles (the truly excellent "Borne On the FM Waves of the Heart," featuring Tegan Quin of Tegan & Sara); and roiling numbers in which Gabel declares his desire to have been born a woman named Laura ("The Ocean"). It's bold and ballsy and really excellent, and for a punk record, it's surprisingly free of the genre's less-than-desirable aspects '' the exclusion, the pissy attitude, the inherent sexism '' so, if that's selling out, well, then I'm buying.

love you prefix. but i'm gonna have to call you out on this one. or at least rant because its friday and i want to go home, or at least stop working.Against Me! are probably the best "punk" band in the world right now...despite the fact that MTV has suddently decided to give a shit about them, and despite the fact that "New Wave" is probably the weakest of their 4 full-lenghts. they've put out some of the best rock and roll records of the past 7 years.they are a "punk" band in every sense of the word. they are probably in the top 3 best live bands i've ever seen (up there somewhere with guitar wolf, turbonegro, the bronx etc) and put together some incredbile tours.for those prefix readers (and writers) who don't know about their history check out the first three records, or go find a live video on YOUtube don't miss out on this band because MTV happens to theink they're cool. oh and they also put together some incredible tours....check out some of their past and future touring partners:Hot Water Music, The Blood Brothers, Cursive, Mastadon, Planes Mistaken for Stars, These arms Are Snakes, The Riverboat Gamblers, Alkaline Trio, Matt and Kim, Two Gallants, The Gaslight Anthem

Guess I wasn't too clear, but I wasn't bashing Against Me!Took a jab at MTV, but that's all I meant by the post. Just wanted to spark some discussion regarding good "punk" bands in 07.

Ditto for No Age.

This subject sort of bums me out - all the exciting punk bands I recall seeing or hearing as of late are all old bands who've been around for ages or reunited. Otherwise, Clorox Girls are decent but they're not that rough, more like an Exploding Hearts-type of deal. Throw Rag and the Shocks are alright. I thought the new Planes Mistaken for Stars was disappointing, though they were typically good. I'd kill for a modern version of Stiff Little Fingers or the Adverts, though. But to go along with Bearface, Against Me! is pretty brilliant as a live band though their newest couple of records aren't nearly as good as Reinventing Axl Rose and As the Eternal Cowboy. My additional two cents is that any record with a Tegan and Sara member on it can't be too great.

One more thing! Mika Miko - they remind me of a female version of the Germs, minus the thesaurus usage. Good stuff. Why is it that new punk all veers toward the polished hardcore, rather than old-fashioned three-chord crap? Three-chord punk is way more fun to listen to (you can't hop about to hardcore).

I agree. why is new punk trying so hard to be complex by being polished hardcore? It really isn't as fun as it could be. It's not catchy for one thing. That's for sure...

'borne on the fm waves' is a little cheesy as far as titles go, but still a great song. and i think the name tom sings in 'the ocean' is actually Ora. its a much older, more traditional name.
