Activision Gently Reminds Love That Kurt Cobain Is, In Fact, For Sale

Courtney Love exploded all over the place this morning with a diatribe against the Kurt Cobain avatar in Guitar Hero 5, using the legal terminology “sue the shit out of Activision” to describe her future plans. The video game company, in a model of corporate restraint, responded with the following statement: Activision is responding to queries regarding the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness in Guitar Hero 5 with the following statement:

“Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero® 5.”

Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the two surviving members of Nirvana, have no say whatsoever in the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness.

As hard as that last part is to swallow, the smart money says that Activision can produce the paperwork and Courtney Love is trying to have it both ways: acting like the rocker she used to be while using the Cobain’s fame to maintain a lifestyle her own art can no longer support.
