New Beatles-based film apparently atrocious

But then again, what would one expect from a film titled Across the Universe and billed as a musical based around Beatles' tunes? That alone makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Now comes news from Nikki Finke, quite the great writer on all things Hollyweird, that test audiences reacted horribly to the movie, which has led to a brouhaha between it's director and producer. Over at her blog Deadline Hollywood, Finke has the dish on the dispute between director Julie Taymor (Titus Andronicus, Frida) and Joe Roth. After the initial gags by test audiences, Roth re-cut the film himself without telling Taymor and showed it to more viewer guinea pigs, who gave the new cut much better ratings. Now Taymor is pissed and the chance of any version of the film ever finding it's way into megaplexes is unknown.
Curious to see what the debacle looks like? The pic above is a still from the film, and you can view it's trailer here.

No suprises here. if you have seen Titus, you will know what I'm saying. I would never expect anything positive from Julie Taymor.

Taymor also did Frida, an incredible film. She has won countless high-brow awards. The initial screenings have actually received really strong responses (including by two of my friends who are both serious film and beatles fans). Roth is NOT a reputable producer, as he was largely at the helm of Gigli and Revenge of the Nerds 2.... enough said?

I gotta go with Jared on this one... Taymor has done some spectacular things in her career, and she most likely made a challenging and beautiful film that Roth wants to turn into America's Sweethearts 2. I say let her show her damn movie.

Test screenings are the filmmaker's worst enemy. Apparently Roth screened this visually complex, 60's set love story based on Beatles songs for mall-going teenagers. Not exactly a fair fight. Julie Taymor is extremely talented. Her movies may not be slam dunks but are so visually stimulating I'm willing to donate two hours to see what she'll do next. And Roth is a notorious dickhead. Director credits include Christmas with the Kranks and Revenge of the Nerds 2. He's also Executive Producer on Little Man and Hollywood Homicide.

I've never seen Frida, but I did like Titus. Yes it's over the top, but I think that was part of the point. Anyhoo, I'm sure as with many things Hollywood, there are no clear cut good guys and bad guys here. A bunch of big egos clashing.

I guess I'm just of the opinion that it's always better to let the artist have their say. It's the right thing to do philosophically, but it makes good financial sense too. Not only will better directors be more likely to work with you in the future, but in the long run you are more likely to get your money back on an initial bomb that goes on to become a critically acclaimed masterpiece than if you re-edited crap to make it somewhat palatable and made back a little bit of money up front. It's the big problem with movie studios these days (read: in the past twenty five years): they want to eliminate risk and maximize short-term profits, two things the entertainment industry is not built for.
