A-Ha - "Take On Me" a la A.C. Newman

A.C. Newman has got his work cut out for him. No one escaped the '80s (or at least a VH-1 I Love The '80s marathon) without having their inner ear permanently affected by the dog-whistle pitch A-Ha singer Morten Harket hits at the, er, climax of the chorus to the Norwegian band's ubiquitous hit "Take On Me." Newman, of New Pornographers fame, has announced that he will be tackling the tune for, of all things, a Starbuck's Valentine's Day album. For his sake, we hope he preps for the part with an industrial-size latte or something. But maybe Newman will subvert convention, defy expectation, and avoid that freakishly high note altogether; for instance, dropping down to his lowest register instead could have some comedic value, or maybe he'll do his Lou Reed version and just speak the whole thing. Whatever his decision, we just hope he doesn't wind up trapped in some cartoon netherworld like Harket did in the video.

I wonder how A.C. Newman got conned into that. With his unflappable good taste and appreciation for Sparks and Sex Clark Five, Mr. Newman might just reinvent the tune and make it listenable.
