40% of music sales will be digital in 2012, 100% of predictions will be wrong
In-Stat, the 'leading provider of actionable research', has some interesting figures regarding music sales trends. They claim that by 2012, digital music sales will make up 40% of the music sold worldwide, up from 6% in 2006 and 10% last year. What they don't mention in their press release (the full price of 'actionable research' is $3,495) is that 40% of 2012's music sales could very well be the exact same number of sales if the industry continues its sharp decline. They also forget to mention that 99.8% (we're accounting for mall kleptomaniacs) of illegally-gotten music will also be digital, and, as one Hypebot commenter remarked, so will the other 60% of the music sold in 2012, unless someone's planning to bring tapes back into vogue.
