With the influx of K-pop entertainment labels targeting the American market, one of the groups that has the most potential to breakout is 2NE1. Debuting in South Korea in 2009, the group’s sound comes across much more westernized than their counterparts. Using electronic and hip-hop elements, their music is much more ferocious than the sweet candy pop that other groups have been churning out.
In a recent poll by the Internet Education Group SevenEduM, a surprising 49% of the voters chose 2NE1 with the highest chance of breaking out in the United States. Behind them were Wonder Girls were T-ara, Girls’ Generation, SISTAR, f(x), miss A, KARA, After School, and 4minute.
Cha Gil Young a representative from SevenEduM states that
“will.i.am who is known to be producing 2NE1′s US debut album visited Korea this past May to stop by YG, and he sat down with CEO Yang Hyun Suk, YG’s main producer Teddy, as well the 2NE1 members to discuss their debut. 2NE1 will also be holding their global tour ‘NEW EVOLUTION‘ and perform in New Jersey, LA, and more. So for a number of reasons, 2NE1 looks as though they can successfully break the US market and I think that is why they were selected as #1.” [allkpop via Nate]
Check out the group’s latest single “I Love You.” Employing sultry beats and a little bit of house production, it’s almost something you’d hear at a club in the United States.
2NE1 will be coming to the United States for two dates on their ‘New Evolution’ tour:
08.17.2012 @ The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey
08.24.2012 @ Nokia Center Theater in Los Angeles, California
