21 Savage Recruits Drake and Young Thug On Fiery New Song “Issa”

The epic collab was produced by Wheezy, TM88, and Bricks

Late last year, Young Thug posted a now-deleted teaser on his Instagram of a new track with 21 Savage. The rumors swirled, but nothing materialized. Yesterday, the highly-anticipated track leaked, entitled “Issa.” What fans may not have been expecting was the other artist to be featured on the track: the 6 God himself, Drake.

“Issa knife, dawg, I got stripes, dawg,” raps 21 in his slow, gritty flow. Thugger comes in reaching for high notes. “Now they turnt, issa knife war / Know some hitters out the 9th Ward,” raps Thug, with his silky voice gliding across the booming beat. The two rappers compliment each other with their contrasting vocal styles — 21’s voice being low & monotone, and Thug’s voice being elastic & dynamic. Drake chimes in with his unmistakable cadence, rapping, “Issa 21, issa Jeff / Issa profit, dawg, issa net.” The whole track bases its lyrical flow off of 21’s “Issa” theme. Drake and Young Thug stay in line with the concept, keeping the song in 21’s court. Produced by Wheezy, TM88, and Bricks, “Issa” is anchored by saturated 808s, trap hi-hats, and ambient keyboards.

21 Savage has been capitalizing on his viral response to an interviewer’s question about the cross-like tattoo on his forehead, to which he responded, “Issa knife.” His 2017 tour was titled “Issa Tour,” and his upcoming album is, you guessed it, to be titled, “Issa Album.” If something works, why not keep it going?

The three artists on “Issa” have been working closely together lately. 21 hopped on Drake’s single, “Sneakin’,” last year, and Thug made it onto two tracks on Drizzy’s 2017 playlist, More Life: “Sacrifices” and “Ice Melts.” They’ve all been touring together, too, with 21 Savage opening for Thug and Thug opening for Drake. While “Issa” is currently just a rip-quality leak, it’s sure to be a hit whenever the track officially drops.
