Can you imagine a more volatile combination of manic musical miscreants than Hella and The Mars Volta? Don’t answer that. On May 5th, the first of a trilogy of albums by El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez will be released on the Mars Volta guitarist’s own Rodriguez Lopez Productions.
Dubbed Cryptomnesia, the album features Zach Hill (Hella) on drums, Jonathan Hischke (Hella) on synth bass, Juan Alderete de la Peña (The Mars Volta) on bass, Rodriguez-Lopez himself on guitar, and the vocals of guest frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala (The Mars Volta) on eight of the album’s eleven tracks.
Basic tracks for Cryptomnesia were completed in 2006, following the recording of The Mars Volta’s Amputechture, but the album wasn’t finished until Bixler Zavala laid down his vox in 2008. That’s a long time for the dude to find some arcane topics to write about, so you just know this one is going to require an occult encyclopedia to endure.
Recordheads get early access to Cryptomnesia, thanks to an advance offering of 3,000 vinyl copies that will be available only through indie retail shops to celebrate Record Store Day on April 18th. The rest of y’all will have to wait ’til May 5 to have your minds blown. And let us not forget that Rodriguez-Lopez’s solo album Old Money just came out
a bit over a month ago. This guy is going for Ryan Adams’s fecundity crown.
