Yuck: "Coconut Bible"

From the instant that the chiming, iridescent riff of Yuck's "Coconut Bible" (which you can download for free at the band's blog) kicks in, it becomes apparent that the London indie upstarts understand something about Pavement that most imitators fail to grasp. While making the Pavement comparison is easy (frontman Daniel Blumberg told Pitchfork he "sort of just shat" himself the first time he heard the band), defining the similarity is a bit more difficult. This is probably because it has to do with that elusive quality that made Pavement mysterious yet almost impossibly engaging.

"Coconut Bible" also has assuredly surreal wordplay that's funny and intriguing without making a bit of sense. The song's climax comes in ribbons of guitars colored so blindingly bright that Blumberg has no choice but to don his Lou Reed via-Malkmus shades, sit back and coolly repeat "We are going to a coconut covered heaven"(See: the end of "Summer Babe"). Whatever he means, it's difficult to doubt him considering the pop epiphany Yuck reaches here. Not bad for a b-side.
