"Periodically Double or Triple" is the first single from Yo La Tengo's announced today new album, Popular Songs, a two disc album that is slated for release in September  via Matador. The album is allegedly a sprawling epic that finds the band mining various musical forms, but "Periodically" is a shambling garage rock burner that should appeal to longtime fans of the band's work. 

Popular Songs, the follow up to the band's I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, was recorded in Hoboken and Nashville in early 2009 with longtime associate Roger Mountenot. Of course, the band have already released one album in 2009; their covers album as Condo Fucks, Fuckbook.

Popular Songs is due out on September 8.
