There's something loveable about YACHT's carefree daftness. The band's website, for starters, demands that YACHT is capitalized because using the word out of its "capitalized context can refer to commodity fetishism and an advanced capitalist culture that YACHT has prided itself in avoiding since its conception." Well, sure. They also boast some of the most fun but kind of disturbing sing-alongs yet committed to tape (see "The Afterlife" for a good example). All of which suggests that they'd be a pretty awesome act to see live.
That case is furthered with this live cover of Weezer's "Holiday" (being streamed here). Fun, simple, and effective, it's a perfect example of what made last year'sSee Mystery Lights work so well. Weirdly disaffected vocals are combined with a basic drum-machine loop, a few sparse keyboard stabs, and some wonderfully sloppy backing singing. All of which gives the impression of accidentally stumbling into a strange party, only to find out you were on the guestlist all along.
I knew there was some elusive reason for the capitals, thanks for the sense of closure...
They've also said it's an acronym for Young Americans Challenging High Technology, so...
