It's been about four years since we've heard from the musical side of Xzibit. Sure, we have all heard and seen him on the endless stream of Pimp My Ride repeats, but he hasn't been musically active since 2006's mostly well received Full Circle. And while he teased fans with the late 2009 street single, "Hurt Locker," this track here represents the first actual single from his seventh record, MMX.
"Phenom" finds the West Coast rapper sounding hungry as he blends some slick internal rhyming into his flow and a (kind of) hilarious Lorena Bobbitt reference. The visuals for the track look stuck in the late '90s, but X gets a pass for an otherwise enjoyable cut. Also, "Phenom" doesn't really feature Kurupt and 40 Glocc beyond some hype-man shouting, which is unfortunate because Kurupt would probably kill this beat.
MMX is due out later this year.
