Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother must have struck a deal to get his other band to appear on Lopez Tonight when he appeared on the show with Slash earlier in the year, and lo it came to pass yesterday (Aug. 16) with this version of “Cosmic Egg.” You may be forgiven for thinking a modern day version of Spinal Tap has walked on stage when the ridiculously pompous organ intro opens the song.
But perhaps the hard rock scene needs more silly, overblown, crazily pretentious ideas to breathe some life back into it? If so, Wolfmother are certainly capable of delivering the goods—just check out the prog-tastic album art for Cosmic Egg, and listen in wonder as turgid guitar riffs combine with endless screeching guitar solos, overblown operatic vocals, and more wonderfully bombastic organ passages on this performance.
