Punk legends Wire released Red Barked Tree in January--their first album in three years. The record is another shift forward in their sound, while also retaining the spikiness that helped establish their name originally. The band played Jimmy Fallon’s show last night (April 5), where they performed “Red Barked Trees” in what the host claimed was their first American TV appearance in 25 years. Colin Newman sounds in great voice here, and the band gradually works up a slow-build track that’s full of dense guitar parts and leaves the “band bench” members behind them looking befuddled. Just another day at the office for Wire, then.
