The British music press is really going crazy for Wild Beasts’ new record Smother right now, and for once it seems the hype is justified. The album shows off their unique blend of low key guitar-based sounds and electronic components, all topped off by the impressive wail of singer Hayden Thorpe. It’s interesting that they were chosen to appear on the same edition of Later with Jools Holland as the Strokes last night (May 17), with Julian Casablancas’ band looking like last decade’s falling stars while Wild Beasts rapidly come up to snatch their thunder. “Bed of Nails” is a wise choice of track to pluck from Smother for this performance—it’s a wonderful distillation of their atmospheric sound, and is delivered by a group that couldn’t sound more assured.
