“When I’m With You” (MP3)

This Best Coast song could have blasted from a ’50s jukebox, except that Bethany Cosentino is too sarcastic to seem totally earnest. She has a voice like Neko Case, expressive enough to eclipse the guitar haze and reverb beneath; it’s almost theatrical, making for a cheeky power ballad that really does feel something. While “When I’m With You” could be the soundtrack to a greaser saying, “one milkshake, two straws,” Cosentino’s wail of “I hate sleeping alone” speaks more of post-millennium cynicism than bygone sentimentality, suggesting that love is an escape, not a destiny. The self-titled 7-inch is out Nov 24 via Black Iris. [Fader]
