The oddest thing about the lo-fi pop of Washed Out, and similarly minded artists like Toro y Moi and Neon Indian, is that despite their disregard for clean, smooth production techniques, their output still manages to sound bizarrely futuristic. For example, Washed Out's "Luck," a track from his cassette release High Times, sounds like it would be a favorite in some tripped-out, neon opium den, where everyone is dressed in sci-fi patent leather outfits and the girls wear iridescent fiber optic wigs. That association however, likely has a lot less to do with forecasting the cultural atmosphere of the future than it does with Washed Out's ability to evoke very strong, specific moods. [Pitchfork]
