VV Brown’s debut record Traveling Like the Light is currently getting a big promo push Stateside, and the young British singer appeared on David Letterman’s show last night (Aug. 5) to demonstrate the power of her voice. “Shark in the Water” deviates from the doo-wop style that helped establish Brown’s name, instead heading closer to a poppy Motown feel with added Moog gurgles.
If the track sounds familiar already, that’s probably because it’s been foisted on the public as incidental music in a number of TV shows (Ugly Betty, Degrassi: The Next Generation), which is now pretty much a necessary (and wholly depressing) evil for any upcoming artist. But here Brown gives a consummate performance, and even Paul Shaffer is significantly moved to make a rare comment on the show’s musical guest.
