Brooklyn's
Vivian Girls assume their mantel from the seven crusading sisters featured in the bizarre work of brilliant shut-in Henry Darger. While I'm not sure I'd call their brand of fuzzy DIY indie-pop heroic, it does--like the gender confused heroines they admire--have balls. Beyond its defiant garage beat, "Tell the World" is notable for immediately likable gang-sung harmonies than beam brighter than the lo-fi fog they're recorded in. While C86 sweethearts like Tallulah Gosh spring quickly to mind, the sustained vocal notes almost recall an early B-52's song when paired with the hurry-up rhythm. Lyrically they're nowhere near as outlandish as the Athens veterans, sticking to the thematic standby of exuburant new romance. As the first glimpse of an impending self-titled debut it's warm and inviting enough to forgive the well-trod sentiment.
