Vivian Girls

Such A Joke (Live on Pitchfork.tv) (Video)

It’s been a vintage year for anyone obsessed with shambolic British indie bands from the late ‘80s. Bands such as Cause Co-Motion, Crystal Stilts, and Vivivan Girls have made a decent attempt at reviving the heady days of the Shop Assistants, the Razorcuts, and Talulah Gosh. Did copies of NME’s legendary C86 tape suddenly surface in a dusty Brooklyn thrift store a few years back? It certainly feels that way.

The Vivian Girls are re-releasing their eponymous debit album on October 7, and to celebrate the event Pitchfork.tv is streaming highlights from their recent show at the Market Hotel in Brooklyn. The heavily reverbed vocals (which are a hallmark of just about every new band in Brooklyn at the present time) and distorted guitars can’t disguise the fact that the Vivian Girls are a pop band at heart, and the seven-song set includes some infuriatingly catchy tunes, such as this version of “Such A Joke.”
