Brooklyn lo-fi garage queens Vivian Girls have released the lead single from Share the Joy, the band's third album but first with Polyvinyl and new drummer Fiona Campbell (the last one, Ali Koehler, went off to join Best Coast). "I Heard You Say" opens with some group harmonies and turns into a breakup song with a lot of oohs and aahs. There's a pseudo-surf guitar line, too, which is somewhat unexpected.
Generally, "I Heard You Say" is at a slightly slower tempo than previous Vivian Girls songs, and it might not be totally crazy to think these gals are following their old drummer into the Best Coast mold. It's an unfortunate comparison -- especially because Best Coast were branded as the "new Vivian Girls" when they first came out, but as Bethany Cosentino and company have climbed the ranks of underground success, Vivian Girls are still, on the eve of their third album, relatively unknown among people who don't read music blogs. From this song, it seems like they're starting to embrace a less messy, more pop-friendly side to their music.
