Versus: "Gone to Earth"
Versus were sort of like the Freelance Whales of the '90s--constantly derided for being derivative of the zeitgeist while still putting out some pretty great music. In 2010, though--when websites like Altered Zones make indie rock feel like a super-stylish club you probably weren't invited to--Versus' unpretentious earnestness feels revelatory. Vocalist Richard Baluyut was always pretty good at the mid-'90s whine-sing, but here he reveals a more mature voice fit for this decade. And that guitar tone is pure Versus.
This is the second track that we've got to hear from Versus' forthcoming record, and it's been released in conjunction with some even more exciting news: Versus will be playing a couple of shows this fall, with mid-'90s peers Superchunk and Polvo.
