Vandaveer is the nom de chante of Mark Charles Heidinger, who may (or may not) be better known for his work with The Apparitions. His solo stuff tends more towards the twangy acoustic guitar, and it's the kind of alt. country you can get behind: like Ryan Adams did with Emmylou Harris, Heidinger uses female backup in all the right places without letting it overpower his own mournful vocals. And it's got the right kind of down-homey lyrical wisdom, to boot ("When you dance with the devil / you don't waltz for free").
Heidinger grew up with church choirs, and that's evident here: what'll stick in your head is the understated "mm-hmm" that haunts the song. [YANP]
