June 17 Update: Just as I suspected, this is not the final version of the track. Dre released the following statement on the leak:
“I want to set the record straight for everybody who’s been waiting to hear my music. The song that’s on the internet is an incomplete song that I’m still working on. When it’s ready, you’ll be hearing it from me.”– Dr. Dre
Well, shit, man, when are we going to hear it, then?
June 16 Update: “Under Pressure” was supposed to drop two weeks from Dr. Dre’s appearance at a Red Sox game back in April. But it just wouldn’t be a huge hip-hop event if it didn’t face more and more delays. But today, his Detox collaboration with Jay-Z is finally here. And, well, it’s slightly disappointing, as I’d be hard pressed to not compare the beat on here to a Scott Storch or Swizz Beatz joint. That does make sense, though, considering Storch co-produced it. But “Still D.R.E.,” one of several 2001 tracks Dre and Storch worked on together, this is not.
April 4 Update: I also have a difficult time thinking this is the final version as the hook is nowhere to be found, unless you consider those distorted synths a chorus. Dre and Jay’s verses are mostly on-point, but Jay’s references – like when anyone refers to pop culture – sound kind of dated. Tiger Woods, FEMA, and Gilbert Arenas? Those would have worked a lot better two months ago. You know, when this track was originally due out.

April 5 Update: Dr. Dre has confirmed that the first single off Detox is “Under Pressure” featuring Jay-Z. The news was announced before the Red Sox season opening game against the Yankees at Fenway Park. Dre and Jimmy Iovine were in the city to promote Dre’s Beats headphones and spoke of the new song in an interview with New England Sports Network.
We will update this post with the song once it becomes available online.
