I’m an avid reader of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ blog over at The Atlantic. And I’m a music nut. Needless to say, I had some conflicting feelings when I read his post, live from SXSW, the other day that he had passed on a TV on the Radio show.
Well, TNC, this is what you missed.
Dangerous Minds has some gorgeous HD video of the band’s opening number, the 2003 track “Young Liars,” from its set at Stubb’s last night.
The band stretches out on this elegiac number. Usually, I’m not a fan of live concert footage, but this was particularly affecting. Reminded me of seeing the band in a seemingly comparable venue the Hook (does anyone remember how big that place was? My memory may be conflating its scale). The group already exhibited patience in developing the feel of a song -- and there wasn’t even a horn player then! Oh, the past...
Can’t discern who is the bassist, but, regardless, best wishes to Gerard Smith and his loves ones.
The band's drummer -- Jaleel Bunton?? -- took over on bass at this show
