Those Darlins

Daytrotter Session (MP3s)

Sean Moeller really plays up Those Darlins in his description of their Daytrotter session, now up along with four tracks by the Tennessee quartet. It's worth a visit simply to read Moeller's enraptured prose:

They’re like three cacti, three spit storms and three ladies of the rodeo that every man could recognize as being dangerous commodities and not worth the trouble, but that doesn’t usually stop men and that’s why Venus flytraps work as well. There is everything enticing about Those Darlins as they dare you to come closer, to lean in, to buy them another round and then you’re sunk, but there will be a good tale to spin when you’ve come to.

The songs are maybe not as good as all that (though it is worth noting that Moeller isn't exaggerating how pretty the three girls are), but they do boast in spades the two things country does best: rollicking boot-slappers and aching reminiscences. Here are two of the four Daytrotter songs — though nothing else the band has produced is as charming as "The Whole Damn Thing," available on their Myspace. It's an ode to late-night drunken snacking that opens with these lyrics:

I got drunk and I ate chicken

I ate chicken I found in my kitchen

Not just a leg, not just a wing

I'd like to let you know that I ate the whole damn thing

They should play that song at every possible opportunity.
