How do you follow up the pop behemoth that is “That’s Not My Name”? That’s the dilema that The Ting Tings faced when they sat down to figure out the direction of their new record, Kunst, which is set for release at some point in November. The band tested out a song from it, titled “Hands,” on Later with Jools Holland last night (Oct. 12).
The band's label mate, Calvin Harris, mixed this track, and it’s not hard to hear his influence at work on the fizzy pop-electro groove here. If this is an indication of the direction of Kunst then it looks like this will simply be more of the same from the band—albeit with some extremely muted industrial-style percussion in the background, which is reminiscent of the kind of diversion Depeche Mode tried out circa “Master and Servant.”
