The Strokes’ Angles has received a mixed critical reception, so it will be interesting to see how it fares on the Billboard chart in its first week of full sales. Do the public still care about the Strokes? Even Julian Casablancas seems to be having his doubts, but they still dutifully turned up on David Letterman’s show last night (March 23) to perform “Taken for a Fool.” Like much of that record, this has a lot of the elements that made The Strokes huge in the first place, but it’s lacking in anything memorable (A vocal hook? A decent guitar melody? Don’t expect to hear any of the above here) and ends up sounding like a messy conglomeration of different ideas that never really work well together. Still, at least Nikolai Fraiture got to wear a nice white suit.

As a die-hard Strokes fan, I too judged this album before letting it soak in but after a few listen-throughs I really enjoyed it. While it's not what we are used to.. I like the fact that they're trying a new approach considering they've been around for 10+ years. I watched the guys perform on Letterman last night and as I had expected, the song was much better live as I predict the rest of the album will be. Can't wait to hear more from them.

I've liked every strokes album but nothing comes close to their debut for me. maybe they set the bar too high?
