The worst news of the summer for music loving citizens of New York City was the cancellation of the huge free outdoor show by The Specials in Central Park. Visa issues were cited as the reason behind the non-appearance, so it’s a surprise to see the band back in the country just a few weeks after that performance was due to happen—this time appearing on David Letterman’s show.
Perhaps Letterman’s people just know how to zip a band through JFK better than the band bookers at Central Park, but at least we get to see them, albeit briefly, doing this version of “Nite Klub” from the classic Specials album from 1979. It’s interesting that they chose a song partly written by Jerry Dammers, who is notable for his absence from this reunion, but it’s difficult not to get caught up in the infectious reverie that spreads from the stage whenever The Specials are in town.
